Identification of the bearer: Gerolamo Priuli, doge of Venice (1559-1567)
Historical Notice: Venitian patrician family, including three doges of Venice (16th and 17th c.) and one duke of Crete (14th c.). This particular coat-of-arms was placed on the walls of Mylopotamo, perhaps during works of fortification carried out in 1565. Kythira was under Venetian rule from the early 13th century to 1797 (with brief intervals from 1269 to 1309 and from 1715 to 1719).
