Ιστορικό Σημείωμα: Οίκος Βενετών πατρικίων, που έδωσε, μεταξύ των άλλων, οκτώ δόγηδες της Βενετίας και τέσσερις δούκες της Κρήτης. Εδώ απεικονίζεται ο πτερωτός λέων του Αγίου Μάρκου, έμβλημα της Βενετίας, ο οποίος κρατά το οικόσημο του δόγη Domenico Contarini, αντί του συνήθους Ευαγγελίου. Η παράσταση, συνοδευόμενη από τη χρονολογία 1672 (MDCLXXII), διακοσμεί ένα πυροβόλο που βρίσκεται στο κανονοστάσιο πάνω από την ακτή, στην πόλη του Ναυπλίου και πιθανόν χρησιμοποιήθηκε κατά τον Βενετοτουρκικό πόλεμο του 1684-1699. Υπενθυμίζεται ότι το Ναύπλιο διετέλεσε υπό βενετική κυριαρχία για δύο περιόδους, από το 1388 έως το 1540 και από το 1686 έως το 1715.

Historical Notice: Venetian patrician house, including eight doges of Venice and four dukes of Crete. Depicted here is the winged lion, symbol of Saint Mark and crest of Venice, holding the coat-of-arms of Contarini, instead of the usual Bible. The composition, dated 1672 (MDCLXXII), decorates the barrel of a cannon, part of a battery positioned over the sea, at the city of Nafplio. It was probably used during the Turkish�Venetian War of 1684�1699. Nafplio was under Venetian rule during two periods, from 1388 to 1540 and from 1686 to 1715.
