Description:
Identification of the bearer: Religious order emblem
Historical Notice: A Crusader institution par excellence, the Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem adopted naturally as its emblem a white cross on a red field (in heraldic terminology Gules a cross argent). Even after the adoption of the eight-pointed cross (Maltese cross) in the 16th c., in most heraldic depictions the simple Greek cross was still used.
