Identification of the bearer: Matteo Barbarigo, Venetian duke of Crete (1542-1544)
Historical Notice: Venetian patrician house, including two doges of Venice (15th c.) and two dukes of Crete (16th c.). This particular coat-of-arms, seriously damaged today, was posed on the walls of Irakleio during the works of fortification carried out in 1543-1544. Irakleio was under Venetian rule from the early 13th century to 1669.
