Identification of the bearer: Francesco Soranzo, Venetian duke of Crete (1566-1567)
Historical Notice: Venetian patrician house, including a doge of Venice (14th c.) and three dukes of Crete (13th and 16th c.). This particular coat-of-arms, seriously damaged today, is part of a heraldic ensemble which was posed on the walls of Irakleio during the works of fortification carried out in 1565. Irakleio was under Venetian rule from the early 13th century to 1669.
