Ιστορικό Σημείωμα: Οίκος Βενετών πατρικίων, που έδωσε μεταξύ των άλλων ένα δόγη της Βενετίας και ένα δούκα της Κρήτης (17ος αι.). Εδώ απεικονίζεται ο πτερωτός λέων του Αγίου Μάρκου, έμβλημα της Βενετίας, ο οποίος κρατά το οικόσημο της οικογένειας Sagredo, αντί του συνήθους Ευαγγελίου. Τοποθετήθηκε στην κεντρική πύλη του φρουρίου του Παλαμηδίου, προς τιμή του Γενικού Προβλέπτη της Θάλασσας Agostino Sagredo. Υπενθυμίζεται ότι το Ναύπλιο διετέλεσε υπό βενετική κυριαρχία για δύο περιόδους, από το 1388 έως το 1540 και από το 1686 έως το 1715.

Historical Notice: Venetian patrician house, including a doge of Venice and a duke of Crete (17th c.). Depicted here is the winged lion, symbol of Saint Mark and emblem of Venice, holding the coat-of-arms of Sagredo, instead of the usual Bible. It was sculpted on the main gate of the Palamidi fortress, to honour the Provveditore Generale da Mar Agostino Sagredo. Nafplio was under Venetian rule during two periods, from 1388 to 1540 and from 1686 to 1715.
